Yummy stuff on the blogs today.

  • J. Michael Cole on historical revisionism in Taiwan. He publishes regularly in the Taipei Times.

  • Taoyuan Nights with an extensive, great discussion on how Taiwanese are screwed economically.

  • David with a very long post on transitional justice in Taiwan.

  • Scott Sommers has a good article on the politics of examinations.

  • Corbett discovers an academic article on club culture in Taiwan.

  • Andres has some great pics. Go look.

  • MEDIA: Jamestown Foundation has an article reviewing Taiwan's policy to use missiles against China, and its related doctrines, as well as the US position. A top US admiral criticizes the UN referendum plan. Taiwan showcases its biotech skills with exhibition. Taiwan Review has a great article by Brian Kennedy on the changing roles of attorneys in Taiwan, and another one on disaster and rescue agencies on the island. The Taiwan Journal offers selections on the changing role of the Youth Corps, and an article about election culture in Taiwan.

I wish you didn't link to blogs that turn their comments off. Taoyuan Nights provides no numbers whatsoever. It's all about numbers. If the proportion of companies with moats in Taiwan is high (for high-tech industries, it is rather high), or rather, if it is high enough, then sure, bad effects that he mentioned that actually make sense will happen but it will be evened out by the good effects. Also, why is seeing some guys with souped up cars good evidence that there is a lurking consumer lending crisis? How about some bankruptcy rates? Kinda ridiculous speculation all over.

The conventional wisdom is Taiwan's economy will be doing pretty well for the coming year because the US economy is also going to be doing well.

Let me add a ditto to the comment about Taoyuan Nights. Not about the lack of comments, but about half-assed proclamations based on a handful of cherry-picked examples. Housing prices in Taipei are high, therefore everybody everywhere is screwed.
