Response to Letter from the MOJ

The apparently deteriorating situation with respect to the rule of law in Taiwan has prompted an exchange of letters between a group of academics and experts on Taiwan and the Minister of Justice Wang.

The latest installment consists of a point-by-point response/refutation of the letter from Wang in response to the initial Open Letter....

In an open letter to the Taipei Times published on Nov. 25, you responded to our joint statement regarding the erosion of justice in Taiwan. We appreciate your acknowledgement of the sincerity of our concerns, and are grateful to receive a prompt and serious reply.

Read the whole letter. It is hard to imagine how the Ministry can respond to a devastating destruction like this....

I'm sure they won't; they'll consider the matter closed.

On the detention issue, I note that according to this Obama campaign volunteer, Wen Ho Lee spend 243 days (!) in solitary confinement. The courts did apologize to him and he apparently received a US$1.6 million dollar settlement.

Feiren, will that $1.6 million pay for a new reputation? It is hard to pin down character assassination and even harder to make amends for that.

No... but it does help take the sting out of it...

and you get to tell everyone that the accuser was SO wrong that they had to pay out the (fabulous) moolah.
